My Personal Routine

15 years of argan oil, the evening sunscreen habit nobody talks about, and the full routine that keeps people guessing my age

People ask me constantly what I do for my skin. At 55, with 25 years in the beauty industry, I have tried everything. What I keep coming back to is surprisingly simple — and one key habit that almost nobody does. Here is everything, exactly as I do it.

I am 55 years old. I have worked in the beauty industry in New York for 25 years. People regularly ask me what I use on my skin because they assume I must be younger. I am going to tell you exactly what I do — no products I was paid to recommend, no brand partnerships influencing this list. This is my actual routine, exactly as I have done it for years.

The 15-Year Secret

One Drop of Argan Oil — Every Single Night for 15 Years

✦ Judy’s Most Important Anti-Aging Habit

100% Pure Argan Oil —
The One Ingredient I Credit Most

Fifteen years ago, I started adding one drop of 100% pure argan oil to my night cream every evening before bed. I was not following a trend — argan oil was not mainstream at the time. I chose it because the science was compelling and because, as someone who values pure, plant-based ingredients over synthetic alternatives, a 100% natural oil with no additives, preservatives, or fillers felt right to me.

Fifteen years later, I am more convinced than ever that this single habit has been the most significant anti-aging decision I have made. People my age — and people significantly younger — comment regularly that I have fewer wrinkles than expected. When I trace it back, the consistent, long-term use of a pure plant oil is what I keep landing on.

I specifically choose argan oil over coconut oil for the evening facial step because argan is non-comedogenic (does not clog pores) and absorbs completely overnight without leaving residue on the pillow. One drop is genuinely all you need — more is not better here.

Vitamin E — 80%
Highest Vitamin E of any plant oil. Directly protects collagen fibers from oxidative breakdown overnight.
Oleic & Linoleic Acid
Fatty acids that restore the lipid layer of the skin barrier — the moisture-sealing structure that thins with age.
Squalene
A natural emollient identical to the squalene your skin produces — production drops sharply after 30.
Polyphenols
Antioxidant compounds that neutralize free radicals generated during the day — active during sleep.
Non-Comedogenic
Comedogenicity rating of 0 — will not clog pores regardless of skin type. Safe for oily skin.
Overnight Absorption
Absorbs completely by morning. No greasy residue on pillowcase. Skin repaired while you sleep.
Exactly How I Use It — The One Drop Method
1
Dispense your night cream into your palm first
Take your regular amount of night cream into your palm as usual. Do not apply it to your face yet.
2
Add exactly one drop of argan oil to the cream in your palm
Just one drop. Tip the bottle slowly — argan oil is thin and pours easily. One drop is approximately the size of a lentil. More than one drop can make the texture too heavy and may leave residue.
3
Mix the oil into the cream with your fingertip
Use your fingertip to blend the oil into the cream in your palm until fully combined. The cream will become slightly shinier and more glide-like. This takes 5 seconds.
4
Apply to face and neck in upward motions
Apply the oil-infused cream to your face in gentle upward and outward strokes. Then bring it all the way down your neck and upper chest. The argan oil dramatically improves the spreadability of the cream and ensures it penetrates more deeply.
5
Apply a light layer of sunscreen on top as the final step
This is the step most people skip and the one I believe makes the biggest long-term difference. See the section below for why I finish my evening routine with sunscreen.

My Actual Routine

My Complete Evening Routine — Every Single Night

This is not a simplified version or an ideal I aspire to. This is what I actually do, every evening, without exception. Consistency over 15+ years is what makes the difference — not the most expensive products.

Evening Routine · Judy Kim · 55 Years Old
The Full Evening Ritual
Done thoroughly, every night — no shortcuts, no skipping
1
Thorough double cleanse
I start with 100% virgin coconut oil (from the grocery store) on dry skin for the first cleanse — this removes all SPF, makeup, and daily buildup completely. Then I follow with a gentle pH-balanced foam cleanser as the second step. I never skip this. Even on tired nights, this step happens.
Time: 2–3 minutes  |  Key: coconut oil first on dry skin
2
Toner to calm and restore pH
Immediately after cleansing, while skin is still slightly damp, I apply my Korean toner. I press it in with both palms — the pressing method drives the product deeper than wiping. I bring the toner all the way down my neck and upper chest. This step restores skin’s pH and primes everything that follows.
Product: COSRX 6 Peptide Skin Booster or hydrating first essence
3
Serum — wait until fully absorbed
I apply my serum after the toner and wait until it is fully absorbed before moving on. This is the step most people rush. I give it a full 2–3 minutes. You can feel when the serum has absorbed — skin goes from slightly tacky to smooth. Applying the next product before absorption is complete dilutes efficacy significantly.
Wait time: 2–3 minutes  |  Key: do not rush this step
4
Night cream + one drop of 100% pure argan oil
This is the heart of my routine and the step I have done every single night for 15 years. I take my night cream into my palm, add one drop of 100% pure argan oil, mix them together with my fingertip, and apply to my face and neck in upward strokes. The oil transforms the cream — making it richer, more nourishing, and significantly more effective at overnight barrier repair. One drop. That is all.
The habit that changed everything  |  15 years, never skipped
5
Light layer of sunscreen — yes, at night too
Most people will find this surprising. I finish my evening routine with a thin layer of lightweight Korean sunscreen. Not for UV protection — at night there is none to protect against. I do it because modern Korean sunscreens contain skin-beneficial ingredients (niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, ceramides) and create a breathable occlusive layer that seals everything underneath and prevents transepidermal water loss overnight. My skin absorbs everything more effectively with this final sealing step.
This single habit is what most people are missing
Why Sunscreen at Night — Judy’s Explanation
The Night Sunscreen Habit That People Think Is Strange — Until They Try It
I have been doing this for years and it is the tip that gets the most surprised reactions when I share it. Korean sunscreens are not just UV filters — they are skincare products with a bonus sun protection function. The best Korean SPF formulas contain niacinamide, ceramides, peptides, and hyaluronic acid alongside the UV filters. At night, the UV filters are irrelevant — but all those beneficial ingredients still work on your skin. The lightweight occlusive film that sunscreen creates seals your serum, oil, and night cream underneath and dramatically reduces overnight water loss from the skin surface (transepidermal water loss, or TEWL). Think of it as a breathable seal over everything you just applied. Your skin wakes up noticeably more hydrated and plumped.
The Morning Side

My Morning Routine — Simple, Fast, and SPF-Focused

My morning routine is intentionally simple. The evening is where the real work happens. Mornings are about protecting everything I built overnight.

Morning Routine · Judy Kim
Morning Protection Ritual
Quick, light, and SPF is never skipped — ever
1
Gentle rinse — no cleanser in the morning
I rinse with cool water only in the morning. No cleanser. My skin has been doing restorative work overnight — stripping it again with a morning cleanser removes the natural protective oils that accumulated overnight and disrupts the skin barrier I worked all evening to rebuild.
Korean dermatologist-recommended: cleanse only at night unless you exercise in the morning
2
Light toner or essence pat
A quick application of hydrating toner pressed in with both palms. This is about maintaining the hydration balance established overnight, not building anything new. Takes 30 seconds.
3
Light moisturizer if needed
In summer and in New York’s humid months, I often skip moisturizer in the morning — the argan oil and night cream from the previous evening, sealed by the overnight sunscreen, means my skin is already well-hydrated. In winter, I add a thin layer of lightweight moisturizer.
4
Generous sunscreen — the most important morning step
This is non-negotiable. I apply Korean SPF 50 generously every single morning, regardless of weather, season, or whether I am going outside. UV radiation penetrates clouds and windows. Indoor UV from computer screens and windows contributes to photoaging year-round. The single most evidence-backed anti-aging habit that exists is daily broad-spectrum SPF 50. Everything else I do is secondary to this.
Judy’s rule: last step, every morning, generous amount, down to the neck
Korean Sunscreen Recommendation — What I Actually Use

I use Korean SPF 50 specifically because Korean sunscreen formulations are significantly more cosmetically elegant than most Western SPFs — lightweight, non-greasy, no white cast, and often packed with skin-beneficial ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid. My current favorites: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF 50 (available at H-Mart and Amazon, $15–$18) and Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Milk SPF 50. Both apply like a skincare product, not a sunblock. I apply enough to cover face, neck, and upper chest every single morning.

Why It Works

The Science Behind Long-Term Oil Use

Why Consistent 100% Pure Oils Outperform Many Anti-Aging Products

Vitamin E and oxidative protection: Argan oil contains approximately 620mg of Vitamin E per 100g — among the highest concentrations of any plant oil. Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble antioxidant that integrates into cell membranes and protects lipid structures from oxidative damage. Applied consistently over years, it builds a sustained antioxidant reservoir in the skin’s lipid layers that short-term use cannot replicate.

Barrier lipid integration: The oleic and linoleic acids in argan oil are structurally identical to the fatty acids in the skin’s natural lipid barrier (the stratum corneum). Applied nightly over years, these fatty acids integrate into the barrier and functionally rebuild it — reducing transepidermal water loss and improving the skin’s ability to retain moisture independently of how much moisturizer you apply.

Cumulative anti-aging: The anti-aging effect of pure plant oils is largely cumulative — it builds over years, not weeks. This is why I believe 15 years of consistent use has produced results that no 30-day product trial could replicate. The skin’s collagen structure, barrier integrity, and lipid composition are all improved gradually through the sustained presence of protective fatty acids and antioxidants applied nightly.

The sunscreen occlusion effect: Applying a thin film of sunscreen over night cream and oil creates a semi-occlusive layer that significantly reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) overnight. Studies on occlusive wound dressings show that maintaining a moist environment at the skin surface accelerates barrier repair and collagen synthesis. The evening sunscreen habit replicates this effect every night.

Summary

Judy’s Key Rules — What Makes the Difference

Habit What I Do Why It Matters
Oil choice 100% pure argan oil, one drop, every night for 15 years Cumulative Vitamin E and barrier fatty acid rebuilding over years
Oil method Mix into night cream in palm before applying Better distribution, enhanced cream penetration, no greasy residue
Evening cleanse Thorough double cleanse every night without exception Clean canvas — actives cannot work through SPF and makeup residue
Serum patience Wait 2–3 minutes for serum to fully absorb Layering too quickly dilutes all active ingredients
Evening SPF Light Korean sunscreen as final evening step Seals all actives underneath, reduces overnight water loss dramatically
Morning SPF Generous Korean SPF 50, every morning, down to the neck UV is the #1 cause of collagen loss — this is non-negotiable
Neck & chest Every product, every step, including SPF — down to the chest Neck ages faster than the face — same care prevents visible mismatch
Consistency Same routine, every single night, no exceptions for 15+ years Cumulative effect — most anti-aging benefits are built over years, not weeks
Important Notes

Oil patch test: Even 100% pure argan oil can cause reactions in rare cases. Test on inner wrist for 3–5 nights before applying to face. Acne-prone skin: Argan oil is non-comedogenic (rating 0), but individual reactions vary. If breakouts occur, switch to squalane oil (also rating 0). Evening sunscreen: This habit is unconventional. If your skin does not respond well to layering sunscreen at night, discontinue. Start with the lightest Korean SPF formula you can find. Source your oil carefully: Buy 100% pure argan oil with no added ingredients. Many commercial “argan oil” products are diluted with other oils. Look for a single ingredient on the label: “Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil.”

A Personal Note from Judy
“I did not invent anything in this routine. I just paid attention, stayed consistent, and trusted simple ingredients over complicated systems. The argan oil drop started as an experiment 15 years ago. The evening sunscreen habit started because I read the science and decided to try it. The neck care habit started because my mother had beautiful neck skin and I asked her secret — she said she had never treated her neck differently from her face. Now people ask me the same questions I asked her. The answer is simpler than they expect: one drop, every night, for a very long time.”
